132500 emergency help - Response from the NSW SES is 24/7
The NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) is a volunteer-based emergency service organisation dedicated to helping communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters. Operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, NSW SES is the lead agency for flood, storm, and tsunami response in New South Wales.
The Service is supported by over 10,000 volunteers and a growing number of staff members, all committed to building safer and more resilient communities across metropolitan, regional, and remote parts of the state.
What We Do While our core responsibilities remain focused on flood and storm emergencies, our capability has expanded. NSW SES volunteers also: - Undertake vertical, road crash, and land-based search and rescue operations (particularly in rural and regional areas) - Assist in community evacuations and welfare checks during natural disasters - Provide flood intelligence, public information, and warning services during major events - Support other emergency services such as NSW Police, Fire and Rescue NSW, and NSW Ambulance during major incidents - Work with organised community groups to enhance local resilience, share hazard information, and support preparedness initiatives - Deliver community education and engagement programs to promote disaster preparedness and resilience Volunteers in remote communities may also serve as Community First Responders, trained in partnership with NSW Ambulance to provide life-saving medical assistance before paramedics arrive.
Who We Are NSW SES volunteers come from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and professions, united by a shared commitment to service. They play vital roles not only in emergency response but also in community preparedness, training, and recovery initiatives.
Our Vision and Future Focus NSW SES is guided by the NSW Emergency Management Strategic Framework and continues to evolve with a focus on: - Strengthening community capability and local partnerships - Supporting First Nations communities with culturally safe engagement - Harnessing technology for improved situational awareness and communication (e.g., Hazards Near Me app, community flood gauges) - Enhancing volunteer training, safety, and wellbeing - Building strategic relationships with government, business, and community stakeholders
